These big, spicy cookies travel & keep well; taste wonderful & are good for you. Butter, eggs, spices, apples, and raisins can be found at your local Farmers Markets. I always double to recipe as these cookies go fast.
1/2 C. shortening
1 1/2 C. brown sugar, firmly packed
2 C. sifted flour
1 t. soda
1/2 t. salt
1t. ground cinnamon
1/2 t. ground cloves
1/4 t. ground nutmeg
1 C. coarsely chopped nuts
1 C. finely chopped apple – 2 medium
1 C. raisins
1/4 C milk
GLAZE: 1/4 cup sifted confections sugar – 1 tablespoon butter – 1/2 t. vanilla –
2 1/2 tablespoons light cream. Beat till smooth. Spread on warm cookies.
Beat together shortening & brown sugar until light & fluffy.
Beat in egg to blend thoroughly.
Sift flour, baking soda, salt, & spices.
Stir half the dry ingredients into creamed mixture.
Stir in nuts & fruit; stir in remaining half of dry ingredients & milk
Drop from tablespoon 1 1/2 inches apart onto lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake in 400 degree oven 10/12 minutes. Remove cookies to racks & glaze.
