Chestnuts - How to Roast & Italian Chestnut Stuffing

E. Marie

Chestnuts reign supreme in the nut world ...Chestnuts have less than 2% fat and they're high in carbohydrates and excel in valuable proteins. They are extremely versatile, like mushrooms, or any kind of nut.

  • Chestnuts

Roast over an open fire until you can penetrate them with a fork.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and roast them for 15 or 20 minutes.

About 20 seconds, on high, uncovered, in your microwave.

Cut a gash in the flat side and drop in boiling water for 10 minutes.
Have you had chestnut soup … how about chestnut stuffing, add chestnuts to your favorite stuffing recipe!

CHESTNUT STUFFING (enough for a 3-4# chicken):

  • 1# peeled chestnuts
  • 1/2 C. cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 C. melted butter
  • 1/2 C. cream or evaporated milk
  • salt, pepper, celery salt, and thyme to taste

Peel chestnuts while warm – they are easier to peel when warm. Mix chestnuts with rest of ingredients and loosely stuff a 3-4# chicken … or this amount will fit in the breast/neck cavity of a turkey … and fill the body cavity with your regular stuffing. Or place in a small casserole and heat in a 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, until hot!
